A little history
The oldest remains discovered in the commune date back to the end of the Palaeolithic period, 11,000 years ago. The site of la grange des Merveilles was excavated in 1995 along the route of the TGV in the plain of Pujaut. It revealed a small settlement on the edge of a pond, perhaps linked to fishing activities. Rochefort formed part of the viguerie de Roquemaure and of the diocèse d'Uzès in temporal matters. In spiritual matters, however, it belonged to the diocèse d'Avignon.
