Rives-du-Couesnon has been, since 1 January 2019, a new commune in the French department of Ille-et-Vilaine in the region of Bretagne. It was formed from the merger of the communes of Saint-Georges-de-Chesné, Saint-Jean-sur-Couesnon, Saint-Marc-sur-Couesnon and Vendel. It has a population of 2,927 inhabitants.
A little history
At the initiative of Joseph Érard, mayor of Saint-Georges-de-Chesné, the idea was put forward at the beginning of 2018 to create a new commune from five communes that had been grouped together for almost forty years in an intercommunal school grouping syndicate. The municipal council of La Chapelle-Saint-Aubert decided, however, in April 2018 not to take part in the preliminary studies. Deliberations nonetheless continued among the four communes of Saint-Georges-de-Chesné, Saint-Jean-sur-Couesnon, Saint-Marc-sur-Couesnon and Vendel.
