Riez, pronounced locally [ʁiˈjɛs] (in Provençal Riés), is a French commune situated in the département of Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, in the region of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur.
A little history
Riez is considered to be the former capital of the Reii, a Gaulish people who occupied the butte Saint-Maxime before the Roman conquest. The attribution of Riez to the Albices has been abandoned since the research of Guy Barruol in the 1950s. According to the Carte archéologique des Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, it belonged either to the Salyens or to the Voconces. The Romans founded a colony (the Colonia Julia Augusta Apollinarium Reiorum) in the plain, which subsequently became one of the thirteen cities with Latin rights in Narbonnaise, allowing it to become an important centre.
