Rieumes (in Occitan Riumas) is a French commune situated in the centre of the département of Haute-Garonne in the Occitanie region. From a historical and cultural standpoint, the commune lies within the Pays toulousain, which extends around Toulouse along the Garonne valley, bordered to the west by the hills of the Savès, to the east by those of the Lauragais and to the south by those of the valley of the Ariège and the Volvestre. Exposed to an altered oceanic climate, it is drained by the Touch, the Bure, the ruisseau du Montant, the ruisseau de billère, the ruisseau de l'espérès, the ruisseau de Rieu Ferré, the ruisseau le riou tort and by various other small watercourses.
A little history
The bastide was founded in 1317. In 1836, the commune of Rieumes absorbed the commune of Les Perès (today Lesperes or l'Espéres). The history of Rieumes is marked by its role within the French Resistance. The maquis de Rieumes was one of the architects of the Resistants' victory over the Nazis.
