Revel, the town
Revel covers 35.3 km², lies between 179 and 381 m above sea level and had 9,762 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
Revel is a French commune situated in the north-east of the département of Haute-Garonne in the Occitanie region. From a historical and cultural standpoint, the commune lies within the Lauragais, the former « Pays de Cocagne », linked both to the cultivation of pastel and to the abundance of its produce, and to the « grenier à blé du Languedoc ». Exposed to an altered oceanic climate, it is drained by the Sor, the Laudot, the Rigole de la Plaine, the ruisseau d'Aygo-Pesado, the ruisseau du Dourdou and by various other small watercourses.
A little history
The town of Revel was founded relatively late (1342), however the plain and the site of Revel have been occupied since the Neolithic period. The Celts appeared around 300 BC and mingled with the Aquitanians, Ligurians and Iberians in the area. The names of Vauré (Vabero) and Dreuilhe (Druilla) are the names of Gaulish settlements. The plain of Revel saw the appearance of rural estates (villas) following the colonisation of the area by the Romans.
