Remoulins [ʁəmulɛ̃], in Occitan Remolins (meaning "Whirlpools"), is a French commune situated in the east of the département du Gard, in the Occitanie region. It is located 21 km from Nîmes via the RN86 (24 km via the A9 motorway) and 20 km from Avignon via the départementale D6100. Its inhabitants are known as the Remoulinois.
A little history
The grotte du Pont du Gard, known as the Balme Salpêtrière (Grotte de la Salpêtrière), was inhabited by tribes contemporaneous with the Age of the Reindeer. The baume Sartanette and the plateau de Mardieul were inhabited by tribes as early as the Polished Stone Age. In the 4th century BC, a tribe of Volques Arécomiques founded the oppidum de Mardieul or Marduel (an oppidum known as "le Mardieul" or "Sainte Colombe", with a dry-stone enclosure, situated at the summit of a hillock at Saint Bonnet) in the 4th century BC.
