Puget-Théniers (So Puget Tenier in the local Occitan variety, Poggetto Tenieri in Italian) is a French commune situated in the Alpes-Maritimes department in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. Its inhabitants are called the Pugetois. Until 1860, the official name in Italian was Poggetto Tenieri.
A little history
The strategic position on the passage of the Var places Puget-Théniers at the heart of armed conflict between the kingdom of France and the Holy Roman Empire. It also proved beneficial to the town, as a fair and a toll were established there. The plague did not spare this rural market town, which lost a third of its population during the first wave of the Black Death in the mid-14th century. Guillaume de Puget, viguier of Avignon (1347–48), vice-sénéchal of Provence (1353) and knight, was co-seigneur of Puget-Théniers, seigneur of Figanières, of Bargemon, Flayosc, and so on.
