A little history
Before the French Revolution, the old manor of Potigny was the seat of a high court of justice. From 1790 to 1802 the commune of Potigny was a chef-lieu de canton, then it was attached to the canton of Coulibœuf during the cantonal redistricting of year IX (1801), then to that of Falaise-Nord. In 1907, La Société des mines de Soumont was established. This iron mine transformed this small rural market town into a cosmopolitan mining settlement.
