Port-Saint-Louis-du-Rhône is a French commune situated in the département des Bouches-du-Rhône in the région Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, created in 1904 out of the necessity for Arles and Lyon to have a port at the mouth of the Rhône.
A little history
During the winter of 1711, a great flood caused the Rhône to change its course, between Chamone and the sea, over the 25 kilometres of its current channel. To compensate the landowners whose land had been submerged by the river's new course, the Conseil du Roi had levied a supplementary tax across the whole of the Lyonnais, Dauphiné, Languedoc and Provence. This tax was collected on the transport of salt by waterway from 1723, and was intended to finance the embanking of the new arm of the river known as the Canal des Launes. In 1737, the tax was used for the construction of the Tour Saint Louis, situated at that time at the main mouth of the Rhône.
