Pierrefonds is a French commune situated in the Oise department in the Hauts-de-France region. Located on the eastern edge of the forêt de Compiègne, it is principally known for its château de Pierrefonds, restored by Viollet-le-Duc.
A little history
The centre of the village is situated not far from Gallo-Roman remains at mont Berny (the quartier de la Queue-de-Saint-Etienne, shared with the commune of Saint-Etienne-Roilaye, and not the quartier du Mont Berny 900 m to the north-east). These dwellings, gathered in a dense occupation around a fanum, are thought to have been built at the crossroads of the Roman road Soissons-Beauvais via Champlieu (the future chaussée Brunehaut) and Soissons-Beauvais via the ford at Compiègne. The site lies at the edge of the marshes now covered by the forêt de Compiègne and marks the western boundary of the Soissonnais controlled by the Gaulish tribe of the Suessions.
