Crépy-en-Valois is a French commune situated at the heart of the Vallée de l'Automne in the département of Oise in the cultural and historical region of Picardie, administrative region of Hauts-de-France. Its inhabitants are called the Crépynois. A capital city of the former Valois, Crépy-en-Valois is situated at the heart of a basin of 55,560 inhabitants (62 communes of the communauté de communes du Pays de Valois).
A little history
A Gallo-Roman occupation appears to be attested in the close surroundings of Crépy, but nothing on the site itself. From the 10th century onwards, Crépy-en-Valois became the residence of the comtes de Valois, powerful vassals of the kings of France until 1213, the date at which the Valois was incorporated into the domain of the Crown. Given as an apanage, it thus passed to Louis d'Orléans who transformed it into a duchy. In the 11th and 12th centuries, Crépy-en-Valois (the castle and the castral borough) developed, benefiting from its position on one of the routes between Flandre and the foires de Champagne.
