Its inhabitants are called the Clermontois and the Clermontoises. The chief town of its arrondissement and centralising office of its canton, it is situated at the geographical centre of the département, on a hill overlooking the valley of the Brêche.
A little history
Numerous finds (knapped flints, knapped and polished axes, flint shafts) prove a very ancient occupation of the Clermont region by prehistoric peoples, from the Palaeolithic (nomadic hunters and gatherers) and the Neolithic (the appearance of agriculture and livestock farming, the first dwellings and villages). However the hill of Clermont itself has not yielded any prehistoric remains. A distinguished Clermontois scholar, the abbé Breuil (Henri), nicknamed in jest "le pape de la Préhistoire", took a great interest in the subsoil of the region.
