Pertuis, also locally known as Pertuis en Luberon, is a French commune situated in the département of Vaucluse, in the région of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur. It is bordered to the south by the Durance, which having previously served as the boundary between the comté de Provence and the comté de Forcalquier, today serves as the boundary between the départements of Vaucluse and Bouches-du-Rhône. Pertuis is the main town of the pays d'Aigues.
A little history
At the lieu-dits of Tournemire and les Aubettes, lithic remains have been discovered (Levallois flakes, scrapers, nuclei) bearing witness to Mousterian occupation. Around 100,000 years ago, Neanderthal populations would thus stay at times, according to the seasons and the migration of herds, in the south-east of what is now the territory of Pertuis. These same sites have also yielded artefacts that are probably Epigravettian (end of the Upper Palaeolithic) and Chassean (Middle Neolithic). A menhir has been recorded in the quartier de l'Homme-de-Pierre.
