L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue [lil syʁ la sɔʁg] is a French commune situated in the département of Vaucluse, in the région of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur in metropolitan France. Nicknamed la Venise provençale, its inhabitants are called les l'Islois [lilwa].
A little history
A castrum is mentioned during the Roman occupation (Gallo-Roman remains at Velorgues). In the 12th and 13th centuries, the abbaye Saint-André de Villeneuve-lès-Avignon held the prieuré Saint-Gervais there, which had previously been under the abbaye Saint-Gervais de Fos. It was a fief of the counts of Provence, then of the counts of Toulouse, and finally of the Comtat Venaissin of the Holy See (1274). The town was fortified by the popes and became a refuge for the neighbouring towns.
