Pernes-les-Fontaines is a French commune located in the département of Vaucluse, in the region of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur. Its inhabitants are called the Pernois. The commune has 25 sites listed or classified under historic monuments (MH) and has the distinction of possessing 40 public fountains (of which 8 are listed as MH), fountains from which the commune has drawn part of its name since 1936.
A little history
Under the suzerainty of the Counts of Toulouse, from 1125 to 1320, Pernes became the capital of the Comtat Venaissin. Sancha, daughter of the King of Aragon and wife of Raymond VII, lived at the château where she died in 1249. A seal bearing a coat of arms was found in 1993 in the commune. One face bears the cross of Toulouse whilst on the other one can very clearly make out the "VII" among other letters and Roman numerals.
