Peille covers 43.2 km², lies between 190 and 1,268 m above sea level and had 2,123 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
Peille (Pelha (classical and Mistralian) [pˈeja] in the local dialect) is a French commune situated in the département of Alpes-Maritimes, in the region of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur. Until 1860, the official name in Italian was Peglia.
A little history
The remains of an enclosure wall dating from the Neolithic period are present. In 972–973, nobles who had come from the western part of Provence with the army of the Count of Provence Guillaume le Libérateur to drive out the Saracens divided eastern Provence among themselves. The Viscount of Nice of the Mévouillan-Orange lineage, Laugier de Nice and his successors, sought to expand their territory by taking control of communities that resisted their authority, such as Peille and La Turbie. To keep them in check, the viscounts built castles in the 11th century, such as that of Drap.
