Paris 8e Arrondissement, the town
Paris 8e Arrondissement covers 3.9 km², sits at 0 m above sea level and had 35,317 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
The 8th arrondissement of Paris is one of the twenty arrondissements of Paris. Situated on the right bank of the Seine, it is bordered to the west by the 16th arrondissement, to the north by the 17th arrondissement, to the east by the 9th and 1st arrondissements, and to the south by the Seine and beyond it the 7th arrondissement. The 8th arrondissement is both a major tourist destination and one of those where the upper bourgeoisie resides.
A little history
The Seine was formerly a vast river that covered a large part of the current 8th arrondissement. The whole of the boulevard Haussmann, the gare Saint-Lazare and its surroundings, the place Saint-Augustin, the rue La Boétie, the rond-point des Champs-Élysées and the entire southern part of the arrondissement from the place de l'Alma to the place de la Concorde were then covered by water. Only the surroundings of the faubourg Saint-Honoré between the rue Royale and Saint-Philippe-du-Roule and the southern part of the boulevards between the place de l'Étoile and the place de Clichy were above water. Much the same situation recurred at the time of the flooding of the Seine in 1910.
