The 2nd arrondissement, known as the arrondissement de la Bourse, was created by the law of 16 June 1859, at the time of the expansion of Paris to the enceinte de Thiers, giving rise to a new division. Thus the 1st arrondissement was created from part of the former 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 5th and 6th arrondissements.
