The 13th arrondissement of Paris is one of the twenty arrondissements of Paris. It is situated on the left bank of the Seine. It is surrounded by the 14th arrondissement to the west and the 5th arrondissement to the north.
A little history
The 13th arrondissement was created following the expansion of Paris carried out in 1860, by the law of 16 June 1859, by incorporating parts of the former 12th arrondissement, of Gentilly and of Ivry. An initial numbering scheme was to assign the number 13 to what is now the 16th arrondissement, but it was rejected because of the expression « Ils se sont mariés à la mairie du 13e », which meant, when Paris had only twelve arrondissements, "living in concubinage", that is to say outside the bounds of proper convention. The distribution of arrondissements from west to east and from north to south was therefore abandoned in favour of the current scheme, the spiral form.
