A little history
A marshy territory unfit for habitation, the Romans established there two roads leading out of Lutèce, one leading towards present-day Beauvais (Caesasoromagus) which would become the rue du Faubourg-Saint-Denis, and one leading towards present-day Saint-Denis (Catolacus), which would become the rue du Faubourg-Saint-Martin. The territory of the 10th arrondissement, situated outside the walls of the capital, developed first around institutions that needed to be kept away from the city. This was the case for religious and medical establishments, but also for the place of capital executions used by the kings of France on the butte de Montfaucon.
