Paimpont, the town
Paimpont covers 110.3 km², lies between 62 and 258 m above sea level and had 1,772 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
Paimpont (Pempont in Breton) is a French commune in the west of France, situated in the département of Ille-et-Vilaine in the region of Bretagne. The commune is mainly covered by the forest of the same name (commonly identified with the forest of Brocéliande), its inhabitants being distributed still today between a few vast and ancient clearings with an agricultural vocation and the town situated at its centre, which however has only seen late and always limited development. It comprises a few shops, a 13th-century abbey and is surrounded by the listed forest.
A little history
The site has certainly been frequented since at least the Neolithic period, with a Gaulish and then Gallo-Roman presence thereafter. The parish of Paimpont encompassed Saint-Péran and Tréhorenteuc. The monastery founded in the 7th century by Judicaël became the abbaye Notre-Dame de Paimpont in the 13th century. For a long time the town consisted of nothing more than the abbey with its associated buildings such as the hôtellerie for receiving pilgrims, the cemetery and a few dwellings.
