Ouistreham [wistʁeam] is a French commune situated in the département of Calvados in the Normandie region, with a population of 9,212 inhabitants. Since the end of 2014, the municipality has been communicating under the name Ouistreham Riva-Bella (a name change rejected by the Conseil d'État). Sword Beach, one of the D-Day landing beaches of June 1944, encompassed the commune of Ouistreham.
A little history
A "Roman camp" (du Catillon or du Castillon) was situated on the left bank of the Orne near Bénouville. It was levelled and only a small portion of the north-west rampart remains. In reality, modern archaeology rules out the hypothesis that it was a Roman camp, at least not from the High Empire period, as archaeologists have never uncovered a Roman camp dating from that period in northern Gaul, apart from Arlaines at Ressons-le-Long (Aisne), and in all likelihood not from the Late Empire either. The expression Camp romain or Camp de César is generally applied to structures dating from the Iron Age or the Middle Ages.
