Orelle is a rural French commune situated in the département of Savoie in the region of Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. Its territory extends across Moyenne Maurienne from the massif de la Vanoise and its national park to the north as far as the massif des Cerces-Thabor to the south. It forms the crowning point of the winter and summer ski resorts that make up the Trois Vallées, the largest ski area in the world.
A little history
The discovery on the commune's territory of cup-marked stones at Plan-Bouchet, Leschaux and Plan-Py attests to human occupation at a period that is difficult to date. The sculpted engravings, crossbows, Saint Andrew's crosses, pairs of feet and wheel symbols are characteristic of at least two periods predating the Roman era. Whilst the cup-marked stones and engraved blocks appear to suggest that early humans travelled in considerable numbers through the pastoral zone of the Maurienne massifs, there is no firm evidence of the establishment of stable settlements at the level of the highest present-day villages before the Bronze Age.
