Noyon is a French commune situated in the département of Oise, in the Hauts-de-France region. The commune of Noyon gives its name to the traditional pays of the Noyonnais, which is a historic region of Picardy of which it is the principal town. Under the Ancien Régime, Noyon was the centre of a bishopric whose bishop-count was numbered among the Douze pairs primitifs de France.
A little history
In the 19th century, certain authors placed at Noyon the Noviodunum Suessionum, the principal oppidum of the Suessiones, where Jules César established his camp before turning towards the Bellovaques (La Guerre des Gaules, II, 12). However, this hypothesis has long been abandoned. The town was founded in the Gallo-Roman period. It formed part of the civitas of the Viromandui.
