A little history
The territory of the original parish of Noyal-sur-Vilaine is one of the oldest and most extensive of the former bishopric of Rennes. The parishes of Châteaugiron and Brécé (in the 12th century) are offshoots of the parish of Noyal-sur-Vilaine, and furthermore the château de Châteaugiron was probably built on its territory. The parish of Noyal was under the authority of the former bishopric of Rennes and belonged from 1158 to the abbaye Saint-Melaine de Rennes. The monks of the abbaye Saint-Melaine de Rennes established a priory there (before 1152) which only ceased to exist in 1604, the date at which it was occupied by the Jesuits, who were expelled from it during the French Revolution.
