Novalaise is a French commune situated in the Avant-Pays savoyard in the département of Savoie, in the région of Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. The commune belongs to the communauté de communes du lac d'Aiguebelette (CCLA).
A little history
In the 12th century, the monks of Tamié established a grange known as « L'Espine », in the parish of Saint-Jean-de-Novalaise. This is mentioned in 1171 in a papal bull by Pope Alexandre III. The seigneurie l'Epine-Montbel, which includes the mountain of l'Épine, belonged to the sieurs de Montbel, who owned a château, Castrum Montisbelli, mentioned as far back as the 13th century. In ruins since the 14th century, the site of Montbel has become a hamlet of the commune.
