Nailloux [najus] (Nalhós [naʎus] in Occitan) is a French commune situated in the east of the département of Haute-Garonne, in the Occitanie region. Note that the recent orthographic pronunciation ks of the final x is a hypercorrection of the traditional sound S. From a historical and cultural standpoint, the commune lies within the Lauragais, the former "Pays de Cocagne", linked both to the cultivation of pastel and to the abundance of its produce, and known as the "grenier à blé du Languedoc".
A little history
The site of Nailloux appears to have been inhabited very early, as split pebbles and polished stones have been found on the commune's territory. A Gallo-Roman presence has also been attested through the discovery of fragments of pottery, amphorae and flanged tiles. Given the exceptional fertility of the soils, it is possible that the presence of a Gallo-Roman villa may have prompted limited clearance of the land. Settlement appears to have first established itself at the highest point of the commune, that is to say on the site of the present-day place de l'église.
