Moûtiers is a French commune situated in the département of Savoie, in the region of Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. The historic capital of the vallée de la Tarentaise, Moûtiers is a small town with a population of 3,487 in 2023, making it the twenty-first largest commune in Savoie (2018). It is situated in the lower part of the vallée de l'Isère, on the foothills of the massif de la Vanoise and the Beaufortain.
A little history
The first settlements in the valley are thought to date back to the Neolithic period. An axe-spatula, discovered on the commune's territory but without any further details as to the location, would appear to provide evidence of human occupation dating from the Middle Bronze Age. During Antiquity, the Tarentaise was occupied by the Ceutrons. Jules César negotiated with the Ceutrons passage through their territory for his armies.
