Mouthe (pronounced [mut]) is a French commune situated in the département of Doubs, the cultural and historical region of Franche-Comté and the administrative region of Bourgogne-Franche-Comté. Its population stood at 1,022 inhabitants, known as Meuthiards and Meuthiardes, in 2023. Situated at an altitude of between 926 and 1,414 metres, at a distance of 25 kilometres as the crow flies to the south-west of Pontarlier and bordering Switzerland, Mouthe is a mid-mountain commune in the Jura massif forming part of the parc naturel régional du Haut-Jura and the communauté de communes des Lacs et Montagnes du Haut-Doubs.
A little history
In 1077, Simon de Vexin, originally from Crépy-en-Valois (Oise), who was comte d'Amiens, de Vexin and de Valois, withdrew to a monastery near Saint-Claude. To inflict more severe mortifications upon himself, he decided with a few companions to travel up to the source of the Doubs and found a hermitage there. This hermitage originally consisted of a few huts built on a natural mound that would give the village its name, Mouthe being derived from motte. Simon de Crépy stayed there for only one year but the hermitage became, during the 12th century, a small Benedictine priory dependent on the abbaye de Saint-Oyand de Joux (Saint-Claude).
