Mourmelon-le-Grand is a French commune situated in the département of Marne, in the Grand Est region. It is home to one of the most important military camps in France. Mourmelon-le-Grand forms, together with the neighbouring communes of Baconnes, Bouy, Dampierre-au-Temple, Livry-Louvercy, Mourmelon-le-Petit, Saint-Hilaire-au-Temple and Vadenay, a territory nicknamed the Mourmelonnie.
A little history
In 1856, at the behest of Emperor Napoléon III, the camp de Châlons was established on the lands of Mourmelon and the surrounding villages. This decision was to transform the life of this village, which at the time had a population of around 400 souls. The camp was inaugurated in 1857 by the emperor, who set up an imperial quarter there in order to spend his summers. The creation of the camp brought about an increase in population (which tripled), along with a growth in trade (notably cafés) and in infrastructure.
