Mouans-Sartoux (pronounced [mwɑ̃ saʁtu]) is a French commune situated in the département des Alpes-Maritimes in the région Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur. Its inhabitants are called the Mouansoises and the Mouansois. The commune of Sartoux was united with the commune of Mouans, which took the name of Mouans-Sartoux on that occasion, by imperial decree of 28 March 1858 signed by Napoléon III.
A little history
Mouans and Sartoux were two separate settlements, Mouans on the plain, whilst Sartoux was established on the hill of Castellaras. In 1199, the Cistercian abbey Notre-Dame-des-Prés was founded at Sartoux. Around 1350, like many villages in the region, Mouans and Sartoux were abandoned due to insecurity and plague. In the 15th century, the notary Étienne Jusbert became co-lord of Sartoux.
