Montréjeau (pronounced [mɔ̃ʁeʒo], Montrejau in Gascon) is a French commune situated in the west of the département of Haute-Garonne, in the Occitanie region. From a historical and cultural standpoint, the commune belongs to the pays de Comminges, corresponding to the former comté de Comminges, a division of the province of Gascogne situated across the current départements of Gers, Haute-Garonne, Hautes-Pyrénées and Ariège. Exposed to an altered oceanic climate, it is drained by the Garonne, the Neste, the ruisseau du Lavet de Derrière, the ruisseau du Lavet de devant and various other small watercourses.
A little history
The bastide of Montréjeau was born from the treaty of paréage (an association of several lords) between Eugène de Beaumarchais, seneschal of the king of France Philippe III le Hardi, and Arnaud d'Espagne-Montespan, viscount of Couserans, concluded in 1272 at the château de Montespan. This foundation was part of the policy of expanding royal authority in the south of France, with the union of the comté de Toulouse with the royal domain (1271). For Arnaud d'Espagne-Montespan, the aim was to establish a stronghold at the heart of his possessions. The position of the site offers numerous advantages.
