A little history
During the Roman period, Montmirail was a small settlement of 4 to 5 hectares, established on a height overlooking the valley of the Petit Morin. It was situated at a crossroads of land routes, one of which, coming from Saint-Quentin and heading towards Troyes, also served the settlement of Château-Thierry, whilst a second route coming from Meaux then headed towards Châlons-en-Champagne. This settlement was also situated on the southern borders of the cité des Suessions, in contact with the neighbouring cité des Tricasses.
