A little history
Montferrand-le-Château is currently a small commune of 2,000 inhabitants located along the river basin of the Doubs. However, its historic centre sits at the summit of one of the many limestone ridges that are dotted across the Doubs valley, giving a particular relief to the Bisontine region. At the summit of this high point, a complex of fortifications was built, dating in all likelihood from the High Middle Ages and therefore falling between the 10th and 13th centuries, of which numerous remains survive today, scattered throughout the forest that has grown over these medieval vestiges.
