Montesquieu-Volvestre (Occitan, Montesquiu de Volvèstre) is a French commune situated in the centre of the département of Haute-Garonne in the Occitanie region. In historical and cultural terms, the commune lies within the Volvestre, made up of the valleys of the Arize and the Volp, close to the valley of the Garonne, situated to the south of Toulouse and in the northern part of the Couserans.
A little history
A bastide created in 1238 by the Comte de Toulouse Raymond VII, who decided to establish a new town in a meander of the Arize. The archives have not left us written proof of the existence of an administrative, civil or religious entity that might have corresponded to the Volvestre. However, the presence, still attested today in place names, of a fortress (Le Castéra), built in the Roman manner with wooden stakes and predating by far the stone-built castles, suggests that our Volvestre may represent a Carolingian pagus (pays) and even, further back in time, a Gallo-Roman fundus.
