A little history
Montataire has been inhabited since at least the Mesolithic period (the middle period of the Stone Age, between the Palaeolithic, the age of knapped stone, and the Neolithic, the age of polished stone). From the Gaulish era, a gold torque was discovered at Montataire. It is now held in the cabinet des médailles of the Bibliothèque nationale. This piece of jewellery, belonging to a Gaulish dignitary, was unearthed by workers who were engaged in the construction of the railway line inaugurated by the baron de Condé in 1846.
