Montaigut-sur-Save (Montagut de Sava in Occitan) is a French commune situated in the north of the département of Haute-Garonne, in the Occitanie region. From a historical and cultural standpoint, the commune lies within the pays de Rivière-Verdun, a small pays d'élection in the east of Gascony, set apart from the main communication routes, and spreading across the terraces of the left bank of the Garonne, between the valley of the Save and the Lomagne, and extending into Gascogne toulousaine. Exposed to a modified oceanic climate, it is drained by the Save, a branch of the Save, the Arsène, the ruisseau de Cérès, the ruisseau de Ribarot and by various other small watercourses.
A little history
The very ancient human presence is evidenced first and foremost by prehistoric remains discovered during works carried out near the forêt de Bouconne. The principal site, the site Bichou at Montaigut, has yielded more than 2,500 objects and indicators of prehistoric occupation corresponding to two successive periods, the Acheulean (with an estimated age of around 400,000 years) and the Middle Palaeolithic. More recently, the site of a Gaulish village has also been found (near Mondonville) along with traces of fortified Roman camps (at the lieu-dit des Fourtous).
