A little history
As one might imagine, the estuary of the Orne has served for fishing throughout all ages, but it did not have the same maritime vocation as that of the Dives, owing to the ever-changing course of the river and the constantly shifting sandbanks. In 1467, after the Hundred Years War, the château was ruined by the Breton army. Salt marshes existed from Antiquity until the 14th century along the coast, but they disappeared following the introduction of the gabelle. In the 18th century, in the face of tensions with England, a redoubt was built at Merville by Vauban.
