A little history
Traces of human presence on the territory of Maussane have been attested since at least the Neolithic period. At the hamlet of les Calans, to the east of the village, excavations of a sheepfold revealed a statuette depicting a mother goddess. It cannot be ruled out, however, that this statuette originated from another site and was brought to the site of its discovery at a later date. It is above all around the rocky ridge of la Pène, to the south of Maussane, that the greater part of the discoveries relating to Prehistory were made.
