Marignane, the town
Marignane covers 23.2 km², lies between 0 and 100 m above sea level and had 33,692 inhabitants in the 2023 census. Its inhabitants are called the Marignanais.
Marignane (in Provençal Occitan [maɾiˈɲanɔ], Marinhana according to the classical standard or Marignano according to the Mistralian standard) is a French commune situated in the département of Bouches-du-Rhône in the région of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur. The town, bathed by the shores of the étangs de Berre and de Bolmon and crossed by the canal du Rove, is known for housing the aéroport Marseille-Provence as well as the registered office and one of the design and assembly factories of the company Airbus Helicopters (formerly Eurocopter), a manufacturer of civil and military helicopters.
A little history
During the Bronze Age, settlements were scattered and no trace has to date come to light on Marignane other than older traces from the Chasséen to the south of the chapelle Notre-Dame-de-Pitié (Sicard discoveries recorded on the archaeological map of Gaul, the CAG). This presence appears to be linked to particular events rather than to the general movement resulting from the expansion of the Greek city of Massalia at the end of the 6th century BC. During the second Iron Age, the territory appears to have been organised around and from the oppidum de Notre-Dame-de-Pitié, built relatively late at around 380 BC.
