Maintenon is a French commune situated in the département of Eure-et-Loir in the Centre-Val de Loire region. Exposed to an altered oceanic climate, it is drained by the Eure, the Voise and various other small watercourses. A little history
Situated in the Orléanais, the history of the château dates back to the Middle Ages. It was the first fortress of the vassals and counts of Monfort. Numerous lords succeeded one another from the 10th to the 12th century, Avesguaud (978), Germond Ier (1010), Mainier and his wife Élisabeth (1107), Guillaume de Maintenon (1160), Amaury and his wife Émeline (1160-1210), Hughes de Maintenon followed by several lords named Amaury. The château proper was built in a Renaissance style from 1509 onwards under the impetus of the owner of the estate, Jean Cottereau, the treasurer superintendent of finances of Louis XII, and subsequently under François Ier.
