Lorette, the town
Lorette covers 3.4 km², lies between 257 and 500 m above sea level and had 4,983 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
Lorette is a French commune situated in the département of Loire in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Its inhabitants are known as the Lorettois.
A little history
Development in the 19th century was due to the mining of coal. Lorette was created on 25 April 1847, in response to the growth of the steelworks, notably that of the frères Jackson, founded in 1830 at L'Assailly. Its territory comprises former districts of the communes of Saint-Paul-en-Jarez, Saint-Genis-Terrenoire (now Genilac), Rive-de-Gier and Farnay. Lorette has two places of worship. The first is the église Notre-Dame, situated in the lower part of the commune, which was entirely renovated some years ago. The second is the chapelle Jean-XXIII, on the main street of the commune.
