Lignières covers 21.9 km², lies between 153 and 202 m above sea level and had 1,310 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
Lignières, formerly Lignières-en-Berry, is a French commune situated in the département du Cher in the Centre-Val de Loire region. Exposed to an altered oceanic climate, it is drained by the Arnon, the Étang Villiers, the Fausse and various other small watercourses. The commune possesses a remarkable natural heritage comprising one Natura 2000 site and two natural zones of ecological, faunal and floral interest.
A little history
The town is set on an area of ancient occupation, with traces of settlement found in this zone dating back to the Gallo-Roman period. The village of Lignières developed around a château in 1040, built away from the older village of Saint-Hilaire-en-Lignières. The new village established around the château grew and eventually became more important than the old one, which consequently changed its name.
