Lèves is a French commune situated in the département of Eure-et-Loir, in the région of Centre-Val de Loire. Exposed to an altered oceanic climate, it is drained by the Eure, the Coinon and another small watercourse. Its inhabitants are known as the Lévois.
A little history
In 911, after attempting in vain to invade Auxerre, the Viking chief Rollon massed his troops before Chartres. On 20 July 911, he faced the Franks and their allies, led by Richard de Bourgogne, Ebles Ier d'Aquitaine and also Robert Ier, future king of the Franks, in a decisive battle that took place between Chartres and Lèves, and which ended in a Frankish victory. Some 6,000 men are said to have fallen there, the majority of them Vikings. It was at this moment that Charles III le Simple chose to open negotiations with Rollon, which concluded in the autumn of 911 with the signing of the traité de Saint-Clair-sur-Epte.
