Levens ([ləvɛ̃s], Levenzo in Italian) is a French commune situated in the département des Alpes-Maritimes, in the région Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur. Its inhabitants are called the Levensans or Levensois. In Niçois, the place name is also Levens and its inhabitants are lu Levensan.
A little history
The oldest traces of occupation discovered on the territory of the commune of Levens date back to the final Neolithic period. They were uncovered in the grotte du Rat, discovered in 1913 by the village schoolteacher Henri Sivade and republished in 1971 by Roger Cheveneau. The recent reexamination of spoil from old excavations has made it possible to determine a funerary occupation of the site during the Chalcolithic period. Dry-stone structures are visible to the east of the commune, at le Castellar, le Véaou, and at various points along the chaîne du Férion.
