Lédignan, the town
Lédignan covers 6.9 km², lies between 102 and 167 m above sea level and had 1,516 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
Lédignan is a French commune situated in the centre of the Gard département in the Occitanie region. A former canton capital, it is a member of the Communauté de communes du Piémont Cévenol. Exposed to a Mediterranean climate, it is drained by the ruisseau de Bay and the Allarenque.
A little history
The territory of the present-day commune was occupied by a Roman garrison. The discovery in the 1930s of a Roman plaque in the garden of a house in the centre of the village bears witness to the existence of an oppidum. In the Middle Ages, owing to its strategic geographical position at the crossroads of routes, on a slight promontory, Lédignan held the status of a market town and merchants succeeded one another around its château. From the 12th century onwards, the seigneurie de Lédignan formed part of the lands of the domain of the Bermond, baron de Sauve.
