Le Russey is a French commune situated in the département of Doubs, the cultural and historical region of Franche-Comté and the administrative region of Bourgogne-Franche-Comté. The commune is part of the parc naturel régional du Doubs Horloger. The inhabitants are known as the Russéens.
A little history
The history of Le Russey has been quite turbulent, with the massacres of 1476 during the military campaigns of Charles le Téméraire, followed by a slow repopulation in the 16th century, in particular by Catholic Swiss families fleeing the reformed cantons. The 17th century was marked by various plague epidemics and by the destruction of the Guerre de Dix Ans. At the time of the French Revolution, it was in the commune that the conventionnel Jean-Baptiste Noël was arrested on 2 frimaire an II (22 November 1793) while attempting to reach Switzerland. In the autumn of 1793, the strongly Catholic region experienced unrest that was severely suppressed, earning it the name of Petite Vendée.
