A little history
Several archaeological finds from Prehistory and the Bronze Age attest that the valley of the Guisane is an ancient passageway for populations of hunter-gatherers. In 218 before our era, at the beginning of the Second Punic War (218–201), the Carthaginian general Hannibal Barca (247–182), coming from the Iberian Peninsula, led his army as well as war elephants from Gaul into Italy via one or more Alpine passes in order to attack Rome. The exact route taken is not known. Be that as it may, the Romans emerged victorious from this war, as well as from the next one (the Third Punic War, 149–146), which resulted in the destruction of Carthage.
