Le Bourget-du-Lac covers 20.1 km², lies between 226 and 1,496 m above sea level and had 5,216 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
Le Bourget-du-Lac is a French commune situated in the département of Savoie, in the région of Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. The establishment of one of the campuses of the université Savoie-Mont-Blanc in the commune has to some extent made it a student town. Apart from students, the town's economy rests essentially on tourism, the Savoie Technolac business park and the aéroport de Chambéry - Savoie, which allows a large influx of tourists in both winter and summer.
A little history
During the Neolithic period, between 5,000 and 2,500 BC, sedentary communities settled in these lands, including lake-dwelling villages on the shores of the lac du Bourget. The place name le Trou des Fées, formerly Goletta de Fayes, marks the location of the ruins of a Roman aqueduct. In 2025, 56 tombs originating from two funerary clusters dating to the ancient period were discovered during archaeological excavations undertaken by the INRAP. A Cluniac priory (Monasterium beati Mauricii del Borget) was established at le Bourget around the beginning of the 11th century, under the auspices of the first of the Humbertiens, the comte Humbert.
