Le Bar-sur-Loup is a French commune situated in the département of Alpes-Maritimes, in the région of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur. By decree of 27 March 1961, Journal officiel of 1 April 1961, with effect from 2 April 1961, Le Bar became Le Bar-sur-Loup. Its inhabitants are called the Aubarnois (Aubarnenc in Occitan) or the Barois.
A little history
The seigneury of Bar, which had belonged until 1235 to the counts of Provence, was acquired by Rambaud, first seigneur de Grasse du Bar, on 3 April 1235, from Raymond Béranger, count of Provence. The château du Bar remained the property of the family de Grasse until 1792. The legend tells of a count of Bar who held a ball in the middle of Lent, whereupon the guests fell down dead. The danse macabre was painted to commemorate this celestial punishment. In it, Death, equipped as an archer, kills the dancers with arrows.
